What makes ChatGPT cite a page
Overview
There is no toggle that makes ChatGPT cite you — anyone selling that is lying. However, there are three observable signals that correlate with being named in a Southern California real-estate query.
Observable Signals
1. Valid schema.org JSON-LD
The most significant factor is having valid schema.org JSON-LD on the page. This includes @graph with RealEstateAgent and LocalBusiness, along with any aggregateRating that is honestly populated. See geo/schema-jsonld for specific details.
2. Answer-first content
Content should provide a direct, declarative answer in the first paragraph, using named proper nouns that the model can quote without needing context. More on this can be found at geo/answer-first-content.
3. Citable authority
This involves having concrete statistics (like units sold and average days on market), an active Google Business Profile, and consistent Name, Address, Phone number (NAP) across the web. Citation systems favor pages whose identity claims can be verified against independent sources.
Example
The Realtor Maps page is designed to meet all three signals from the start, which is why it is often cited, even as the agent's own site improves. The agent's role is to manage the gbp/posting-cadence, while Realtor Maps controls the citation page.
Non-signals
Factors that do not influence citation include domain age, total page count, the use of "AI SEO" plugins that inject schema, blog post volume, social follower count, or llms.txt (see geo/llms-txt-reality).
